In 2007, South Wales Police hosted the first ever S.P.E.A.R. System™ Weapon Protection Course in the UK. This course was a resounding success with forethinking instructors from forces all over the UK and representatives from the Dutch Police in attendance.
With the current trials of Taser outside of the Firearms remit and by popular request, South Yorkshire Police is to host the second course of this type in 2009.
The recent Home Office Decision to extend the Taser Trial in the UK beyond AFO's is a clear indication of the potential importance of this piece of technology becoming a regular tool for non-firearms officers in every day policing. With this in mind, there is a greater need for appropriate Weapon Protection training. The current ACPO Syllabus for Weapon Retention does not work well with Taser due to its construction.
The S.P.E.A.R. System™ Weapon Protection principles cater for this important area of Officer Safety Training, and not only applies to Taser and other Firearms, but also to other Officer Safety tools like the baton and Incapacitant Sprays. Many UK forces have already taken steps to train their instructors in S.P.E.A.R. System™ principles. The system has already been incorporated into the ACPO Manual of Guidance on Personal Safety Training and is the only approved proprietary training system.
The ACPO Firearms Committee has agreed that Weapon Protection Tactics should primarily be taught by Personal Safety Trainers, and this course will suitably qualify such trainers to teach these tactics to Police staff in their force. This course is more than just a Weapon Retention course; it's a fundamental step-change in the use of unarmed tactics whilst armed, applying the world-renowned startle-flinch research of the S.P.E.A.R. System™ to situations which armed officers may find themselves in:

This course is ideally suited in the first instance to those trainers which have already been exposed to the basic S.P.E.A.R. System™ principles, but in no mean prevents those who have not from attending.
